- My girlfriend randomly heard a bit about the movie but neither of us knew much about it going in besides it being a Studio Ghibli film (which our only experience with that company prior was My Neighbor Totoro). We had just finished 2 films about the dog Hachikō which were already pretty sad (to sum up that story, dog would go to train station and wait for his owner to get off work because they had such a great bond, the owner dies and Hachikō spends years waiting at the same train station), so I thought when going into Grave of the Fireflies that it was gonna be a lighthearted change of pace. Instead, this movie is one of the only movies that has ever gotten me to cry. I agree it was so devastating to watch. Already seeing early on the mom in the hospital after the first bombing in the movie was really hard. I think what happened with the sister Setsuko was even worse though seeing her slowly but surely starve to death. I really enjoyed the movie and appreciate having stuff like it to put into perspective the brutalities of war. I definitely don’t think it’s an easy movie to sit through though and I doubt I’m gonna rewatch it for a long ass time.
